What are we up to in class?
September/October
Reading: Building a Reading Life- Throughout this unit students learn how to become a better reader by reading through all the words in their books and using strategies to figure out tricky words. This unit focuses on helping students get into good habits while reading books. Students also learn how to work with a partner and discuss their books with the class.
Math: Students will learn how to solve addition and subtraction problems. Students will learn to analyze a word problem and figure out what needs to be done. Vocabulary for the beginning chapters: addition sum addend equals plus equation subtraction difference minus few more some in all
Writing: Students will learn how to write about a small moment in their lives. Students learn how to write a story page by page and in order. Some of the lessons include adding action, feelings, and dialogue into our writing. Throughout the unit students write numerous small moment stories. At the end of the unit one of their pieces goes through the editing and publishing phase and it displayed.
Science: Students will learn what a scientist is and the tools needed to be a scientist. Students will learn about the senses.

Using pictures to solve words- breaking words into parts- Thinking to ourselves- Does this sound right? Does this make sense? Does this look right?
Writing: How to books- Teaching someone how to complete a task- introductions, conclusions, sequence words, materials page
Informational Writing- All About Books- Using all your knowledge about a topic and teaching others about it. Examples: All About Pandas, All About Cars, All About Dance...

What are reptiles, fish, amphibians, mammals...
Social Studies: Families/Communities- Families Now and Long Ago
What is a family?
Who is in a family?
How are families different?

How is life different now from long ago?
What technology do we have that did not exist long ago?
How is school different now compared to long ago?
JANUARY

WRITING: Opinion/Review Writing- We are learning how to write a review about a place, person, or object. We are learning different ways to convince our readers to believe our opinion.
Math- We have been studying way to display data on charts, such as tally charts and picture graphs. We have also been working on our addition and subtraction skills.
Science- We have been learning about all different types of mammals, reptiles, fish, insects, and birds. We have been learning to classify animals, as well as understand their life cycles.
Social Studies: We have been learning about how life was long ago and how life is now. We have been learning about the past, present, and future.
FEBRUARY

Math- Chapter 8: We have been studying understanding place value (tens and ones). We have been learning how numbers are made up of a tens digit and ones digit. We have been working on using cubes to make a ten.
Chapter 9: Comparing Two Digit Numbers
Science- We have been learning about the environment for living things. What is an environment? What helps plants and animals live in places? How do plants and animals need each other?
Social Studies: We are learning about families in communities. What are different kinds of communities? What are community goods and services? What are community resources? What is a New York City Neighborhood? How do we honor our communities? What are rules and laws?
